The French Simracer verdict in 30 seconds

The MOZA R16 Ultra is the new 16 Nm Direct Drive wheel base that replaces the older R16 with a flat-wire motor, 21-bit encoder and MOZA’s latest force feedback platform. At €549.90 on TFS when checked on 30 July 2026, it sits €130 above the R12 V2 and €250 below the R21 Ultra. The first month-long independent review praises its smoothness, torque headroom and detail, but also reports a warm case during long summer sessions and software limitations observed with a beta version of MOZA Pit House.

Evidence scope: this is not a TFS hands-on test. Specifications come from MOZA, the current TFS listing and Traxion’s launch coverage. Driving impressions come from Outlaws Racing, which tested a unit supplied early by MOZA for one month. That review used beta Pit House software, so its software findings describe the pre-release state rather than a permanent limitation.

What is new on the MOZA R16 Ultra?

MOZA launched the R16 Ultra on 28 July 2026 as the replacement for the original R16 line. It retains the 16 Nm class but adopts the compact rounded design and updated motor architecture already seen higher in the Ultra family.

The important change is not simply the torque number. MOZA combines 16 Nm of constant torque with a high-density flat-wire motor, ultra-low cogging, a 21-bit magnetic encoder, a 600 MHz processor and its NexGen force feedback system. The intention is to provide smoother steering transitions, faster processing and enough torque headroom to preserve smaller effects during heavy cornering loads.

Why 16 Nm and zero cogging matter

Constant torque describes what the motor is designed to sustain, not a brief peak figure. You do not need to drive at 16 Nm continuously to benefit from the reserve. Torque headroom helps the wheel base reproduce a heavy steering load and a smaller kerb, tyre or surface signal at the same time without compressing everything into clipping.

Cogging is the step-like magnetic resistance sometimes felt when rotating an unpowered or lightly loaded motor. MOZA’s flat-wire design aims to reduce that sensation to an imperceptible level. Outlaws Racing reports that the shaft rotated without detectable magnetic steps by hand and that this smoothness remained noticeable once driving.

A 21-bit encoder provides 2,097,152 measurable positions. Resolution alone does not guarantee better force feedback, but it gives the control system fine steering-position data. The motor, processing, firmware and game signal still determine what reaches your hands.

What does the first month-long review report?

Outlaws Racing received its unit from MOZA before release and used it almost daily for a month. Coming from an R12 V1, the reviewer found the R16 Ultra notably smoother and praised its ability to preserve small details under heavier force feedback loads.

In Assetto Corsa, the review describes clear kerb, gravel and impact information and treats the extra torque primarily as detail headroom rather than a reason to run maximum force. A small amount of friction was added in Pit House because the zero-cogging response initially felt lighter than expected.

The balanced part of the verdict matters. The reviewer says 12 Nm was already sufficient for personal use and would not necessarily justify upgrading from an R12 at full cost. The R16 Ultra becomes more compelling for someone moving from an R5, R9 or lower-output ecosystem and wanting a long-term 16 Nm class base.

iRacing at 360 Hz—and the beta-software caveat

The R16 Ultra supports iRacing’s 360 Hz force feedback mode through MOZA Pit House. Outlaws Racing found iRacing the strongest software pairing during its test, with a more continuous and detailed response than lower-rate implementations.

Le Mans Ultimate was less convincing on the pre-release setup: the reviewer encountered configuration friction and occasional delayed detail. The article explicitly associates those observations with beta Pit House software. They should therefore be treated as a launch-state warning to verify current firmware and profiles, not as proof of a permanent LMU problem.

Project Sim Racing’s short sponsored first-look video confirms the compact physical format and 16 Nm positioning, but it is an unboxing and visual overview rather than an independent driving review.

Pit House, RGB and thermal management

MOZA Pit House provides wheel-angle, force feedback, post-processing, interpolation, friction, damper and force-curve adjustments. The dual RGB strips can display flags, traction-control activity, pit-limiter status and other supported telemetry, with colour and brightness configuration.

The early review found the lighting useful in iRacing but inconsistent in some other titles. Because the test relied on beta software, the current support matrix should be checked before treating any specific RGB effect as universal.

MOZA uses temperature monitoring and intelligent torque regulation to protect sustained output. During hot-weather testing, Outlaws Racing found the aluminium housing noticeably warm after long sessions but did not observe torque reduction with its conservative thermal setting. That is one review under summer conditions, not a laboratory thermal result.

Mounting, ports and ecosystem compatibility

A 16 Nm base belongs on a rigid aluminium-profile cockpit or a mount specifically rated for high-torque Direct Drive hardware. The R16 Ultra supports bottom, front and side mounting, which makes it easier to adapt to different wheel decks and front-mount brackets.

Dedicated ports cover MOZA pedals, dashboard, shifter, handbrake and emergency stop switch. The MOZA Quick Release supports the brand’s native steering wheels without an additional adapter.

PC is the native platform. The current TFS listing states Xbox support when the base is paired with the MOZA ESX steering wheel, because console authorization comes through the wheel. PlayStation compatibility is not stated and should not be assumed.

The R16 Ultra costs €130 more than the R12 V2 and €250 less than the R21 Ultra at the checked prices. That makes it the logical middle choice, but not automatically the best one. If you already run an R12 comfortably below clipping, the upgrade may be modest relative to cost. If you use a large or heavy wheel and regularly want more headroom, 16 Nm is easier to justify.

Who should buy the MOZA R16 Ultra?

Choose the R16 Ultra if you want to enter or remain in the MOZA ecosystem with enough torque reserve for long-term use, a rigid cockpit and a preference for smooth, highly detailed force feedback. It is particularly relevant when moving up from entry-level or single-digit-torque hardware.

Choose the R12 V2 if 12 Nm already meets your force and clipping requirements, or the R21 Ultra if maximum headroom is worth the larger budget. Console users must also factor in the compatible steering wheel: the base alone does not create Xbox authorization, and there is no stated PlayStation path.
