The French Simracer verdict in 30 seconds

According to Serial Driver’s test, the Pimax Dream Air delivers on its main promise: high-end VR image quality in a headset that no longer feels like a heavy object pulling on the front of the head. Sim Racing becomes noticeably more natural during long sessions. The trade-offs are the stock strap, the facial interface, cable management and a very high price.

What the Dream Air is trying to achieve

Pimax has made major progress in image quality, but its Crystal headsets remain large and front-heavy. That mass can create inertia when a driver turns their head and can become tiring over long sessions.

The Dream Air aims to keep a premium display in a much smaller package. Pimax lists a headset weight under 170 g, Sony Micro-OLED panels at 3,840 × 3,552 pixels per eye, ConcaveView pancake lenses and a 110-degree horizontal field of view. It is available with SLAM or Lighthouse tracking; the video tests the SLAM version.

Design, weight and comfort

Compared with the Crystal Super OLED, the Dream Air looks more like a ski mask than a large VR headset. That small form factor changes head movement immediately: the reviewer no longer feels the same front-heavy inertia. The finish also feels more refined than previous Pimax generations.

The integrated audio is a pleasant surprise. It is not hi-fi, but it is usable for driving while keeping some awareness of the surroundings. The thin side arms also leave room to wear an additional headset over the VR unit.

The stock rear fabric strap is the main ergonomic weakness. It is thin, difficult to position and can work poorly with the two cables joining behind the head. In the video, a small community 3D-printed guide found on Printables improves strap placement and makes the headset much easier to put on.

Crystal Super OLED-level clarity

The strongest point in the review is the display. Moving from the Crystal Super OLED to the Dream Air, Serial Driver does not notice an obvious loss in image quality. Sharpness, contrast and overall clarity feel comparable, provided the PC can render the resolution properly.

In iRacing, cars remain clear at a distance and braking references are easy to read. The Micro-OLED panel brings deep blacks and a very dense image, although the final result still depends on the simulator, OpenXR or SteamVR settings and GPU power.

This is the reviewer’s practical impression, not an instrumented measurement. Pimax’s official product information confirms the 3,840 × 3,552 resolution per eye, Sony Micro-OLED panels and 110-degree horizontal FOV.

Pimax Play and tuning

The video highlights Pimax Play’s progress. Essential settings can be left on automatic, while advanced users can adjust OpenXR, foveated rendering, image quality and per-game profiles.

The software exposes firmware, SLAM tracking, IPD, eye tracking, audio, brightness and refresh-rate settings. The Dream Air runs at 90 Hz by default and can be set to 72 Hz. The practical advice is to choose a stable refresh rate instead of chasing a higher setting with frame drops.

The Dream Air in Sim Racing

Once properly adjusted, the main advantage becomes clear on track. The Dream Air preserves VR immersion and depth perception while greatly reducing the feeling of a heavy headset. Looking towards a rival, an apex or a hairpin feels more direct because the head is not fighting the same inertia.

Driving a Ford GTE at Laguna Seca in iRacing, Serial Driver describes an image that feels identical to the Crystal Super OLED. The improvement is therefore not a dramatic resolution jump, but the combination of that image quality with a headset light enough to wear for longer.

The headset connects directly to the PC through DisplayPort, with USB and separate power. It is not wireless, so cable routing remains part of the cockpit setup.

The compromises to understand

  • Strengths: very low headset weight, detailed Micro-OLED image, strong Sim Racing immersion, usable integrated audio and more approachable software.
  • Trade-offs: imperfect stock strap and facial interface, potentially annoying cable junction, limited room for glasses, demanding PC requirements and premium pricing.

The facial interface is magnetic and compact. The reviewer notices minor light leakage and would prefer thicker padding or a fabric option. Glasses are difficult to use in this form factor; dedicated prescription lens inserts are the practical solution.

In the context of the video, pricing starts at roughly €1,783 ex VAT for Lighthouse and reaches about €2,050 ex VAT for SLAM, before VAT and delivery. The reviewer estimates roughly €2,500 delivered including tax. These amounts must be checked again in the catalogue before publication.

Verdict: who should buy the Pimax Dream Air?

The Pimax Dream Air is aimed at PCVR and Sim Racing enthusiasts who accept a premium price to reduce headset fatigue. Serial Driver’s test suggests that the low weight does not require a major image-quality compromise.

Buyers should still expect some setup work and accept that the strap, facial interface and cable routing are not perfect out of the box. Users who wear glasses or have a modest PC should check their configuration carefully before ordering.

The Dream Air makes sense when VR is your main way to drive and long-session comfort matters. If value for money is the priority, a more affordable headset or a triple-screen setup may remain more rational. This is a passion-and-comfort purchase, not a universal upgrade.
