Conspit ARES Guide: Apex 8 vs ARES 12 vs Platinum 20

Short answer
The Conspit ARES 12 CDR is the most balanced base in the current range: compact, 12 Nm, 23-bit optical encoder and enough headroom for most PC drivers. The ARES Apex 8 Nm is the value entry, while the ARES Platinum 20 Nm offers the strongest performance-to-price proposition if you have a rigid cockpit. The main caveats are PC-only operation, a smaller ecosystem, Quick Release generation checks and less unanimous software/FFB reviews than the headline specifications suggest.
Current range, evidence and product generations
This article is an editorial analysis, not a claim that TFS personally tested every ARES base. Specifications, prices and compatibility come from the active TFS catalogue and current manufacturer material. Boosted Media's one-year ecosystem video provides hands-on observations for the ARES 12 and Platinum. Later reviews by OC Racing and Dan Suzuki are used to explain firmware evolution and the range of credible opinions.
The public TFS range checked on 30 July 2026 contains three torque tiers:
- ARES Apex at 8 Nm;
- ARES 12 at 12 Nm;
- ARES Platinum at 20 Nm.
Shopify also contains two active ARES 12 listings. One is the earlier 12 Nm version, currently €559.90, while the newer page is explicitly identified as the CDR QR version at €589.90. They represent a generation and Quick Release distinction within the same torque tier, not a fourth ARES performance model.
Compatibility warning: never assume that mechanical NRG-style compatibility guarantees USB power or data compatibility. Confirm the base-side generation, wheel-side CDR/CDP hardware and pinout before mixing parts.

The older ARES 12 listing remains active at €559.90 with a crossed reference price of €589.90. Its page describes the earlier CDP ball-lock approach as optional, a 260 mm length and a 5.6 kg weight. The current CDR listing should be treated as a distinct purchasing configuration even though both deliver 12 Nm.
The Apex listing is named “CDR QR Version,” but its package wording also describes CDR hardware as optional. Buyers for whom the included Quick Release is decisive should confirm the exact box contents shown on the live product page or with TFS before ordering.
A compact platform with different motor and encoder tiers
ARES 12 and Platinum: skew-pole motor and optical encoder
The current ARES 12 and Platinum use a skew-pole Direct Drive motor and a 23-bit optical encoder. Conspit positions the skewed magnetic layout as a way to reduce torque ripple and cogging. The encoder provides a very high-resolution position signal for the motor-control loop.
Boosted Media points out an important nuance: a 23-bit number is impressive on paper, but drivers cannot isolate encoder resolution from firmware, filters, motor geometry and control-loop behaviour. Dan Suzuki nevertheless found the updated 12 and Platinum smooth around centre, with clean time-based effects such as damping, friction and inertia.
ARES Apex: lower cost, different encoder
The Apex uses a 21-bit magnetic encoder and is listed with a compact 196 mm length. The current product page still describes a skew-pole motor, while Boosted Media's comparison states that the motor platform is not identical to the skew-pole design discussed for the 12 and Platinum. Because Boosted Media had not tested the Apex in the source video, this guide does not transfer their ARES 12 driving conclusions to the 8 Nm model.
That distinction matters: the Apex is the price entry, not simply an ARES 12 capped by software. Its value must be judged on its own 8 Nm ceiling, compactness and €369.90 price.
Mounting and heat management
The current listings provide four M6 bottom holes and four M8 side holes. Boosted Media also found the adjustable bottom rails compatible with common mounting patterns in its samples. Optional front mounting exists in the ecosystem, but Dan Suzuki reports that the front adapter spacing did not match the common standard on his rigs. Measure before choosing front mounting.
Boosted Media ran the ARES 12 and Platinum at full output for much of its testing without thermal throttling. The rear electronics area became warm, but the motor housing remained controlled in their conditions. That is a useful long-session observation, not a guarantee for every ambient temperature and installation.

ARES Apex 8 Nm: the accessible entry
The Apex lowers the entry price to €369.90 and shortens the housing to 196 mm. Its 8 Nm output is enough to provide a clear Direct Drive step over gear- or belt-driven systems, especially with a compact Formula or GT wheel.
The 21-bit magnetic encoder is not a reason to dismiss it. Well-implemented 21-bit systems can be precise and smooth. The real question is headroom: 8 Nm reaches clipping sooner when strong cornering load, kerbs and quick chassis events overlap. In-game strength should be calibrated rather than simply set high.
A desktop mount exists specifically for the Apex, but the desk must tolerate dynamic loads. A proper cockpit remains the preferred solution. The Apex makes most sense for a first PC Direct Drive setup, moderate force preference or a budget that prioritises wheel and pedals as well as the base.
ARES 12 CDR: the range sweet spot
The ARES 12 adds 50% more maximum torque than the Apex, moves to the 23-bit optical encoder and uses the compact 270 mm high-grade platform. At €589.90 for the current CDR page, it targets the most competitive part of the market.
OC Racing's one-year follow-up is important because the physical hardware remained broadly unchanged while firmware and Conspit Link evolved. The reviewer describes clearer road texture, kerbs and tyre loading after updates, with a personal sweet spot around 9–10 Nm and enough reserve for occasional peaks.
Dan Suzuki similarly describes the 12 Nm base as very close in character to the Platinum, only with less torque. He attributes a cleaner and more immediate response to the updated firmware and Open FFBoard foundation. Those are his observations; Boosted Media's later ecosystem review remained less enthusiastic about overall refinement.
For most buyers, 12 Nm is sufficient. Choose the Platinum only when the extra 8 Nm of headroom is part of the objective, not because a larger figure automatically means a better signal.
ARES Platinum 20 Nm: the performance-value flagship
The Platinum combines 20 Nm, a 23-bit optical encoder, a 7.9 kg compact housing and a current TFS price of €729.90. That is only €140 above the current ARES 12 CDR price, making the upgrade unusually tempting for a rigid cockpit.
Dan Suzuki's updated test describes a composed force-feedback signature, clear front-end loading, believable understeer lightening, controlled kerb impacts and strong slide communication. He also reports stable behaviour on straights and enough torque headroom to avoid compression when configured sensibly.
Boosted Media reaches a more cautious conclusion. Its team found good subtle details but felt the complete experience remained less refined than alternatives, and criticised software polish and hardware-revision consistency. The fair conclusion is not that one reviewer must be wrong. Different firmware, filters, sample revisions, games and preferences can all change the result.
The Platinum is compelling for the price, but it is not automatically safer than a more mature ecosystem. Buyers must value compact hardware and torque headroom enough to accept more research around versions and settings.
Why credible reviewers disagree about ARES force feedback
Early ARES reviews often described a muted or over-smoothed signal. OC Racing and Dan Suzuki both report substantial improvement after later firmware. Dan goes as far as placing the updated Platinum among high-end bases for clean, composed force feedback.
Boosted Media's one-year review, published from a broad ecosystem perspective, still found the overall experience less refined than expected. This divergence is editorially useful because it identifies the real purchase risk: the ARES range cannot be judged from torque and encoder figures alone.
Factors that can explain the difference
- Firmware date: signal processing changed materially after launch.
- Filter settings: low-pass, reconstruction-style sharpness, damping, friction and inertia can alter the character.
- Hardware revision: reviewers report incremental changes and early Quick Release tolerance differences.
- Simulation: LMU, iRacing and ACC do not send the same force signal.
- Steering wheel: diameter and mass change speed and perceived detail.
- Preference: some drivers prefer a clean, stable signal; others want more immediate high-frequency texture.
For that reason, update firmware before judging the base and use current profiles as starting points. A launch-era verdict should not be applied automatically to a 2026 unit, but later positive reviews should not erase credible criticism of software and revision clarity.
CDR, CDP and third-party steering wheels
CDP: compact proprietary approach
The earlier ARES ecosystem used Conspit's CDP-style Quick Release. Reviewers describe it as light and mechanically rigid, but some early samples showed tolerance or play differences. Current product pages increasingly emphasise CDR, so existing CDP owners should not assume direct interchangeability.
CDR: familiar NRG-style mechanical format
The current 12 and Platinum pages use CDR. Its mechanical format resembles the common D1/NRG family. Dan Suzuki highlights its open pass-through pinout and the ability to preserve wheel-side hardware in a more standardised strategy.
Mechanical fit is only half the question. Power, ground and USB data must use the expected contacts. Confirm the electrical pinout and adapter board before combining Conspit, Simagic, MOZA, NRG or third-party wheel sides.
Open force feedback does not remove adapter needs
Conspit does not lock force feedback when a third-party wheel is used. A separate wheel may still require a 70 mm adapter, CDR wheel side, USB-A spacer or its own USB cable. Plan the complete connection path rather than buying only the mechanical coupler.
Conspit Link 2.0, firmware and ecosystem
Conspit Link 2.0 handles wheel-base calibration, maximum force, steering range, effects gain, friction, damping, inertia, filtering and game profiles. OC Racing reports clearer parameter explanations and automatic preset selection when launching supported simulations. Boosted Media found the fundamentals present, including UDP forwarding, but judged the interface and tuning depth less polished than leading ecosystems.
The range is Windows PC only. There is no native PlayStation or Xbox support in the current TFS listings. Conspit's official ecosystem includes wheels, pedals and dashboards, but remains smaller than Simagic, Fanatec or MOZA.

- Use a current game preset as a baseline.
- Adjust filters one at a time.
- Check straight-line oscillation, clipping and fatigue over several laps.
- Save separate profiles for circuit, rally and high-downforce cars.
ARES by simulator and driving discipline
iRacing
OC Racing tested the updated 12 Nm platform with a focus on natural front-tyre loading and predictable lightening at grip loss. The Apex can cover moderate settings; the 12 Nm model offers the broadest balance. Platinum headroom is useful when you want stronger sustained load without flattening peaks.
Le Mans Ultimate
Dan Suzuki specifically cites controlled kerb behaviour in LMU. The 12 Nm and Platinum are the relevant choices for dense prototype and Hypercar feedback. Excessive filters can remove the tyre and front-end information, while excessive gain can create clipping regardless of the encoder specification.
Assetto Corsa Competizione
ACC rewards a stable profile over long GT stints. The ARES 12 is likely the best match for most drivers. The Platinum offers more reserve with a larger rim or stronger steering, but thermal comfort and physical fatigue should be evaluated over a full stint.
Rally and rapid countersteer
A compact Direct Drive base can suit rapid direction changes, but heavy damping and friction slow the wheel. The Apex is easier to manage, while the 12 and Platinum should use dedicated lower-force rally profiles. This article does not claim that Boosted Media tested the Apex in rally.

The Conspit ARES range deserves consideration because its prices are not achieved by offering only headline torque. The current 12 and Platinum pages combine compact housings, optical encoders, modern CDR variants and an improved software platform.
ARES 12 CDR is the safest general recommendation. It gives most drivers enough force and reserve without the physical demands of 20 Nm. The Platinum is the standout value when the cockpit is already rigid, especially at only €140 more. The Apex is the budget entry, but buyers should not assume the untested 8 Nm model reproduces every quality attributed to the 12 and Platinum.
The deciding risk is not raw performance. It is ecosystem maturity, version clarity and software preference. Update firmware, verify the exact Quick Release and treat both very positive and more critical external reviews as useful evidence.
