Fanatec CSL GT3 vs Formula V3: Which Wheel Should You Buy?

The answer in 30 seconds
The CSL GT3 is the €169.90 value choice: 300 mm, Xbox licence, rubber grips, dual analog paddles and QR2 Lite. The Formula V3 costs €359.90 and justifies its €190 premium with a carbon front plate, 2.7-inch OLED, extensive LEDs, denser controls and metal QR2. Choose by car type and platform before choosing by appearance.
A source-led buyer’s guide
This article compares current Fanatec and TFS specifications. It does not claim that TFS performed a back-to-back test. External reviews generally place the CSL GT3 as an accessible, comfortable GT wheel and the Formula V3 as a more complete ClubSport interface; the conclusions below stay anchored to measurable differences.

300 mm GT or 290 mm Formula?
The 10 mm diameter gap looks small, but the shapes target different cars. The CSL GT3’s wider grips and open upper section suit GT racing and remain easier to use in cars that need more steering angle. Its 300 mm diameter also softens the perceived response of a small wheel base slightly.
The Formula V3 concentrates controls around a 290 mm rim. It is better matched to Formula, prototypes and modern cars driven with limited steering rotation. It can still drive GT cars, but it is less natural for rally, drifting or road cars where hands may need to cross.
Neither wheel is dramatically lighter than the other. The main force-feedback difference therefore comes from diameter, rigidity and Quick Release rather than a large mass reduction.
The €190 premium is mostly interface and construction
The CSL GT3 already provides nine buttons, toggles, multi-position controls, a FunkySwitch, magnetic rocker shifters and two analog paddles that can act as clutch, handbrake or combined brake/throttle. Its small OLED supports the Tuning Menu and basic information.
The Formula V3 moves into a different interface class: two 7-way FunkySwitches, three 12-way rotary switches, two thumb rotaries with push, additional switches and buttons, plus RGB RevLEDs and FlagLEDs. The 2.7-inch display offers multiple Intelligent Telemetry Mode layouts when the game supports them. This matters in cars where brake bias, traction control, engine maps and hybrid functions are changed while driving.
Not every game exposes every LED or telemetry function. A richer wheel cannot create data that the title or platform does not supply.
Platform compatibility decides the comparison
- PC: both work through a compatible Fanatec wheel base.
- Xbox: the CSL GT3 carries the required Xbox licence; the Formula V3 does not.
- PlayStation: compatibility comes from a PlayStation-licensed Fanatec base, not from either rim alone.
- Wheel bases: both list CSL DD, Gran Turismo DD Pro, ClubSport DD/DD+ and Podium DD models, subject to firmware and Quick Release configuration.
If you race on Xbox, the decision is effectively made. On PlayStation, verify the base first. On PC, the comparison returns to ergonomics, controls and budget.
Which Fanatec wheel should you buy?
Choose CSL GT3 if…
- you need Xbox compatibility;
- GT racing is your priority;
- €169.90 leaves budget for pedals or Boost Kit;
- you want analog paddles without ClubSport pricing.
Choose Formula V3 if…
- you drive Formula and prototypes;
- you need many rotary controls;
- a larger telemetry display and LEDs matter;
- you want carbon construction and metal QR2.
The Formula V3 is not simply a premium GT3. It is a different tool. For a driver who maps only a few functions, the CSL GT3 is far better value. For complex Formula cars, the extra controls can remove keyboard or button-box dependence.
