USB Pass Through in Sim Racing: How Does It Work?
Source video: SerialDriver — USB passthrough: what is it?
The French Simracer answer in 30 seconds
USB pass through routes a USB steering-wheel connection through a compatible Quick Release and Direct Drive wheel base before it reaches the PC. It does not improve force feedback or make an incompatible wheel compatible: it mainly removes the coiled external cable around the shaft. The full chain must match—wheel connector, pinout, Quick Release, base USB path, power and Windows driver. The Simagic QR-A is one current TFS example for Alpha EVO bases and verified third-party USB wheels.
USB pass through: a simple definition
A conventional USB steering wheel connects directly to the PC. With pass through, the data and power travel from the wheel into a compatible Quick Release, through the wheel base, and then to the computer.
Steering wheel → Quick Release → wheel base → PC
The purpose is cable management and interoperability. The wheel still appears to Windows as a USB device and continues to use its own driver or software. The wheel base is acting as a physical data path, not translating every protocol.
Every link in the chain must match
| Link | Check | Typical risk |
|---|---|---|
| Wheel | USB operation and power demand | Proprietary protocol or excessive current |
| Internal cable | Connector and exact pinout | Reversed power/data wires |
| Quick Release | USB input, bolt pattern and current limit | Mechanical fit without electrical compatibility |
| Wheel base | Documented USB pass through path | Power-only or proprietary communication |
| PC | Driver, port and powered hub | Disconnects or unstable enumeration |
Electrical safety: Do not copy a cable only because the connector looks identical. GX12, JST, USB-C and proprietary connectors can use different pinouts. A wrong 5 V or ground connection can damage the steering wheel.
Examples from current and recent ecosystems
Simagic Alpha EVO and QR-A
The current Simagic QR-A USB Adapter is designed for Alpha EVO bases. Its product page lists 50 mm and 70 mm mounting, a built-in USB-C interface and a 5 V / 1.5 A maximum. Simagic also publishes a list of jointly tested third-party wheels, including Cube Controls Astra and several Ascher Racing and GSI models. Compatibility can still vary by protocol, so the exact wheel must be checked.
Asetek
SerialDriver presents Asetek as an early adopter of USB pass through with Quick Release solutions that route a wheel cable internally or externally. Product generations and accessories can change, so use the current manufacturer documentation rather than treating the January 2026 video as a permanent compatibility list.
Proprietary or power-only systems
A Quick Release with electrical contacts does not necessarily carry standard USB. Some ecosystems use proprietary wireless, optical or direct-connect protocols. A third-party wheel may still work through a direct cable to the PC even when pass through is unavailable.
USB direct or USB pass through?
USB pass through
- Cleaner cockpit
- No external coil around the shaft
- Faster wheel changes when the chain is verified
- Useful for multi-brand USB wheels
Direct USB
- Simpler diagnosis
- Works independently of the base
- Fewer connectors in the path
- Often the safest fallback
Pass through does not inherently reduce latency or improve button response. It also introduces extra connectors and a possible power limit. For endurance or competitive use, reliability matters more than hiding a cable.
Troubleshooting a wheel that is not detected
- Test the wheel directly on the PC first.
- Install the official wheel driver and firmware.
- Verify the base-to-PC USB cable required for pass through.
- Check the Quick Release current limit and the wheel’s demand.
- Use a shorter known-good data cable.
- Remove passive hubs and test a powered USB hub if the cockpit has many devices.
- Re-check the documented pinout before using any custom cable.
Does USB pass through change iRacing, LMU or ACC?
No game requires “USB pass through” as a feature. If Windows correctly recognises the steering wheel, its buttons, paddles, rotaries and rev lights can be mapped in iRacing, Le Mans Ultimate, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Automobilista 2 or other PC titles according to the wheel’s software support. Pass through only changes the physical USB route.

Frequently asked questions
Does USB pass through improve force feedback?
No. It routes steering-wheel USB data and power; the wheel base still generates force feedback.
Can any USB wheel use pass through?
No. Connector, pinout, power demand, Quick Release and base support must all be verified.
Can I use the wheel without pass through?
Usually yes, if the wheel supports direct USB operation on the PC.
Is a powered USB hub recommended?
It can improve stability in a cockpit with many devices, but it does not fix an incompatible pinout or protocol.
